Help for Compromised Tax File Number (TFN) & Required Actions

What to do if you have found out or suspect someone has stolen your Tax File Number (TFN) or tax-related information has been compromised.

Firstly, please notify us and the ATO immediately.

As a precaution, the ATO may lock affected details, preventing pre-fill information from being accessible through myGov or a tax agent. If access to this information is required, please contact the ATO directly at 1800 467 033.

It is recommended to notify the following entities if you suspect identity theft:

  • Police
  • Your Financial Institution
  • Your Superannuation Fund

Accounts with Medicare and Centrelink may also be impacted and should be reviewed.

Support Numbers to Contact:
  • Scam and Identity Theft Assistance: 1800 595 160
  • Tax Agent Assistance Line: 1300 292 371

For more information on managing identity theft and cyber safety, visit: ATO Identity Protection and Cyber Safety

The ATO have suggested clients affected to use IDCARE: IDCARE Official Website | Identity Theft & Cyber Support. You will need to provide the reference code: ATO21-IDC to receive their free service.

Next Steps:

If an amendment to a tax return is required, it will be prepared and lodged to correct any unauthorised activity. Please note that additional steps with the ATO may be necessary to ensure the amendment progresses.

To ensure accuracy, provide your updated bank account details directly to our office. For security, we recommend calling rather than emailing this information.

If you have any questions or require further assistance, please contact our office for support.
